St. Paul paper cutting Tuesday standalone biz section, stock listings

The St. Paul Pioneer Press will combine its business section with its news section on Tuesdays, and also cut its stock listings during the week, according to a memo from publisher Guy Gilmore posted on the paper’s Web site.

The memo stated, “Today’s A section combines local, national, international and opinion into a single section. Tuesday also will have a single main news section and will include business news. This will be our ongoing practice: one main news section on Mondays and Tuesdays, with traditional sectioning the remainder of the week. Additionally, we are replacing the Tuesday through Friday stock listings with a financial and markets report. On Saturday, we will continue the current practice of running week-end results for stocks and mutual funds.

“As markets change, newspapers change with them. Newsprint is our second-largest cost, and newsprint prices have increased more than 30 percent this year. So, we are adjusting to this new business condition. By consolidating sections on Monday and Tuesday, we can save a few pages of newsprint per week.

“We intend to keep the Pioneer Press aligned with its readers and the marketplace. We know that Mondays and Tuesdays are among readers’ busiest days and that a more compact presentation makes sense. And we know that in an electronic age, readers increasingly go online for their daily stock results.”
