South Carolina paper's biz editor leaving

Jason Foster, the business editor at The Rock Hill Herald in South Carolina, is leaving the paper for a job at The (Raleigh) News & Observer, another McClatchy newspaper.

Foster writes, “I’ve been at The Herald for seven-and-a-half years and have served in several roles. For the past 14 months, I’ve been business editor. This is a job that has allowed me to write about the successes and challenges facing local businesses during one of the most historic times in American financial history.

“I tried my best to tell the stories of how the Great Recession played out locally, how it affected everyday people, the struggles it produced, the creativity it forced, how it drove some people to take a chance and start anew doing something completely different.

“It might have seemed like much of what I wrote contained bad news. Sometimes it felt that way. I’ve written dozens of stories about companies laying off workers or closing all together, the soaring unemployment rates, high gas prices, more.

“But there have been plenty of bright spots, too. I’ve written about local folks who chose to see a layoff as an opportunity and started their own businesses. I’ve written about the upsides of a down economy, such as the deals to be had on homes, cars and other expensive items.”
