Schouten hired to run WSJ newsletters

Cory Schouten

Longtime business journalist Cory Schouten has been hired by The Wall Street Journal to oversee its newsletters as a senior editor.

He starts Monday.

“Email newsletters and alerts are unsung workhorses of the news business — remarkably effective at reaching readers and generating ad dollars,” said Schouten in an email to Talking Biz News.

“And the Journal is one of the best at them, dispatching more than 50 a week across topics and industries. My charge will be to find ways to optimize the content, format and voice of existing emails and launch new ones so we can deliver more of the Journal’s world-class journalism to happy subscribers around the world.”

Schouten is a former president of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and most recently worked as a senior editor at Columbia Journalism Review.

Schouten spent a year as a Knight-Bagehot fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Before that, he was the managing editor of the Indianapolis Business Journal.

Schouten covered the real estate beat, launched a real estate blog and wrote enterprise stories before taking over as managing editor in March 2013.

A graduate of Indiana University, Schouten joined IBJ in 2006 after stints at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, where he covered politics and government, and the Arizona Republic, where he covered education.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
