Amran Abocar, global mining editor and Canada bureau chief at Reuters, sent out the following announcement:
Colleagues,
Delighted to announce that Ernest Scheyder has been appointed Americas Mining Specialist, based in Houston. Ernie will be responsible for some of the biggest mining companies in North America and become a key player in our efforts to dominate coverage of this sector and, in particular, the global race for lithium. With the world’s largest lithium producer Albermarle Corp based on his doorstep and the Trump administration rocking global markets with metals-affecting sanctions and tariffs, he will be well-positioned to report on the implications for the mining industry. Ernie will also deputize for me on the global mining file.
Since he joined Reuters in 2009, Ernie has covered energy and commodity companies. After five years in the New York bureau, he moved to North Dakota to cover the Bakken shale, reporting on the oil boom as part of a one-person assignment.
He has been based in Houston since 2016, covering U.S. shale companies and international oil producers. He works closely with our OPEC coverage team and carved out a niche reporting on the role of private equity in the U.S. oil patch. Ernie was a finalist for Text Reporter of the Year in 2016 for coverage of the Dakota Access Pipeline saga and the oil price bust. In 2013, he was a finalist for Storytelling Innovation of the Year for use of iPhone video for energy multimedia projects. And in 2017, Ernie and Houston colleagues were finalists in the Breaking News category for their Hurricane Harvey coverage. Elsewhere on the file, Ernie has covered general news topics including the Dallas police shootings, the Sandy Hook massacre, and the Penn State sex abuse scandal. A Maine native and avid endurance athlete, Ernie is running his fifth marathon this fall.
Ernie, who will be reporting to me, takes up his new role on July 1 after one more OPEC meeting in Vienna.
