Mike Connelly, executive editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, writes in a column that the Sunday business section is being suspended partly because of a weak local economy.
Connelly wrote, “We hate to do this, but the Internet has changed the value of Sunday business.
“For decades, Sunday business sections were built around weekly stock listings. But as more people use the Internet to check stock prices, it didn’t make sense to run nearly the same stock information on Saturday and Sunday. Several months ago, we moved the weekly stock listings out of the Sunday newspaper and combined them with the Saturday listings.
“If the local economy were stronger, we would reinvent the Sunday section now. Instead, we are moving the local columnists — Jerry Chautin’s small-business column and Robert Stepleman’s investing column — and the interest-rate tables to Business Weekly in the Monday newspaper.
“Starting Monday, Business Weekly will have a new look and new features, all aimed at giving you an edge at the beginning of the work week.”
