Schouten will start next week as senior editor/interim managing editor at CJR.
The magazine’s board is currently searching for a successor to editor Liz Spayd, who’s taking over as the New York Times public editor. Schouten will be working with Vanessa Gezari, who is stepping into the role of interim editor during the search, and editing staff and freelance work, including coverage of the business side of media.
“It’s a cool gig, and a fantastic team,” said Schouten in an email to Talking Biz News. “I appreciate the opportunity, and I’m excited to pitch in these next few months during an important transition for CJR.”
Schouten spent the last year as a Knight-Bagehot fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Before that, he was the managing editor of the Indianapolis Business Journal.
Schouten covered the real estate beat, launched a real estate blog and wrote enterprise stories before taking over as managing editor in March 2013.
A graduate of Indiana University, Schouten joined IBJ in 2006 after stints at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, where he covered politics and government, and the Arizona Republic, where he covered education.
