“I’m grateful for all the best wishes from colleagues,” said Runningen in an email to Talking Biz News. “No finer group to be associated with.” His last day of work was Monday, Dec. 1.
Runningen is a 1972 graduate of Winona State, where he was editor of the student paper, The Winonan. After graduation, he worked for The Wabasha County Herald.
He then spent five years as press secretary for Rep. Al Quie of Minnesota before returning to journalism, covering Capitol Hill for the SNG Group of newspapers, which was a family-owned chain of papers based in Illinois.
In 1991 Runningen was asked to serve as press secretary for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the George H. W. Bush administration. When Bill Clinton was elected president in 1994, a changing of the guard took place, and Runningen returned to journalism, joining Bloomberg News.
During his time covering the White House, Runningen has traveled to 38 countries on six continents and filled four passport books.
