Greg Bartalos, editor in chief of RIA Intel, spoke with The Investors Podcast’s Steve Curley about his business journalism career.

He was first hired by Institutional Investor in 1995.

“Initially I was thrilled,” said Bartalos. “I got my break, but then as I started the job, I said, ‘Hmmm, I’m not sure this is for me. It was a little bit dry.'”

His mother advised him to stick with it for three months and read The Wall Street Journal to improve his understanding of the markets.

“Soon, stories and concepts and everything came together,” said Bartalos.

Bartalos was at Royal Media as its editorial director before joining Institutional Investor’s RIA Intel last year.

“That appealed mightily because it was a startup within a big company,” said Bartalos about RIA Intel, which launched slightly more than a year ago.

He was in charge of Barrons.com from 2009 to 2017. At Barrons.com, Bartalos oversaw editorial content for the site.

That followed his role as assistant managing editor of Yahoo Finance, a position he had held since 2006. He previously served as senior editor of Barrons.com.
