Reuters names West Coast top news editor

Martin Howell, top news editor and deputy editor of Americas for Reuters, sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

I am very pleased to announce that Sue Horton, who has been Op Ed and Opinion Editor at the Los Angeles Times for the past six years, will be joining the top news team at the beginning of  February.  Sue has a very strong track record as an editor and investigative reporter. In 13 years at the LA Times, she has also had stints as Deputy California Editor and as Sunday Opinion Editor. She was Editor-in-Chief of the LA Weekly between 1994-2000 and as a writer/reporter for the Community Information Project she did investigative reporting for Sixty Minutes and 20/20 among others.

Sue was assistant professor of journalism at the University of Southern California for seven years, a time when she also did investigative projects for many publications. She wrote“The Billionaire Boys Club”  about a cult-like investment group run by a 23-year-old failed commodities broker and some Los Angeles prep-school classmates that turned to murder and kidnapping to solve its financial problems.  The book, published in 1989, was made into an NBC mini-series.

Sue will be based in Los Angeles. She replaces Peter Henderson, who will next weekbe starting his new job as Deputy Editor for Companies, overseeing our consumer, technology and media coverage.
