I’m delighted to announce that Jonathan Weber, formerly our West Coast bureau chief, is returning to Reuters to assume the role of Global Technology Editor. He’ll start Sept. 7 and be based in New York.
Jonathan brings an unparalleled wealth of knowledge and experience to this newly created post. From 2011-2014, he served as Reuters’ West Coast Bureau Chief, where he drove coverage of such major stories as the Facebook IPO and several municipal bankruptcies and oversaw groundbreaking work on ageism and classism in Silicon Valley. A true pioneer in technology journalism, Jonathan earlier served as the founding editor and editor-in-chief of Industry Standard, the first business magazine focused on the Internet economy, before launching New West Publishing, a multiplatform media company. During a career that also included stints as Technology Editor at the Los Angeles Times and, more recently, managing editor of technology start-up The Information, Jonathan has led his newsrooms to numerous awards, including a Loeb and a slew of Online News Association honors.
As Global Technology Editor, Jonathan will be responsible for leading Reuters’ coverage not of the technology sector per se, but rather of the many ways technology is transforming and disrupting how we work and live — from healthcare and hospitality, to media and manufacturing, to finance and education. He’ll work collaboratively with reporters and editors around the globe to frame distinctive stories on the challenges and opportunities faced by companies, industries and sectors as they contend with automation, apps, and other rapid technological advancements. The role reports to me.
A New York native, Jonathan has spent much of his career in the U.S. West, where like a true Californian, he enjoys sailing, skiing and other outdoor activities. His wife Karen and three almost-adult kids are wondering what they’ll do with their menagerie of pets when they get to New York.
