Reuters names new Korea bureau chief

Jean Yoon, regional editor for Asia for Reuters, sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

I am delighted to announce that Tony Munroe has been appointed Bureau Chief, Korea, where he will oversee a multimedia news operation in Seoul that covers everything from the feudal regime in North Korea to global technology powerhouse Samsung.

Tony has spent most of his Reuters career in Asia and is currently bureau chief in Mumbai, where he has covered stories ranging from monetary policy to India’s nascent gaming industry to the mysterious Sahara conglomerate.

Before moving to India in 2009, Tony was based for nine years in Hong Kong, where he started as a technology correspondent, then headed the Greater China company news team before leading the Asia investment desk, where he launched the DEALTALK format. Throughout his time in Hong Kong, Tony covered the workings of multi-billionaire Li Ka-shing and his corporate empire.

A native of Washington, D.C., Tony joined Reuters in 1998 in Boston after working for newspapers. Outside of the newsroom, Tony enjoys reading and running — also known as avoiding Mumbai traffic — and is looking forward to hiking in the hills of Seoul with his two dogs. He will take on his new posting on June 2 and report to me.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank David Chance for his superb leadership and firm grasp of the key stories from two Koreas. We will miss his sharp news judgment and sense of humour.

Please join me in congratulating Tony on his new appointment and wishing David all the best in his new role as the economics editor for the Americas. David leaves for Washington in May.
