Reuters Canada bureau chief Amran Abocar sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:
Colleagues,
We are pleased to announced Jim Finkle has been appointed Americas cyber security/technology editor, based in Canada. In this management role, Jim will have direct reports in the Toronto bureau from where he will drive the regional cyber file.
Jim joined the Boston bureau of Reuters in 2005 as a tech reporter covering IT services, hardware and software. Prior to that, he worked for UPI, Bloomberg News and other news organizations in Tokyo, Taipei, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Jim began covering computer hacking shortly after he joined Reuters, turning it into a full-time beat several years before competitors began to take the subject seriously. Jim has written stories on a wide variety of hacks, from iPhones and cash registers to implanted pacemakers, automobiles and the electricity grid. He has collaborated with colleagues across the file, leading to scoops on stories including last year’s Bangladesh Bank heist and subsequent attacks over SWIFT, the Target breach and destructive attacks on Saudi Aramco and Sony’s Hollywood studio. His tenure with Reuters was interrupted in 2015 when he took a job at a cyber security startup, returning three months later with a deeper appreciation for journalism.
Jim was one of the original members of the Reuters Americas Talent Council and helped set up the Reuters LGBT Journalists Forum (https://thehub.thomsonreuters.com/groups/lgbt-journalists-forum). He still speaks rusty Mandarin, is a big theater fan, meditates daily and is looking forward to cross-country skiing and snow shoeing in Canada.
Jim takes up his new role in Toronto in mid-March and will report to Jonathan Weber, Global Technology Editor.
