I’m pleased to announce a new team member and an expanded remit for the graphics team.
The Society of News Design recently saluted Reuters for creating ‘visual stories’ rather than ‘stories with visuals’. As part of our efforts to expand visual and multimedia storytelling we are creating a special group within graphics to focus on the presentation of our investigative and enterprise packages. This team will also produce graphics-driven stories with the same depth, ambition and power of our best investigative, explanatory and data journalism.
The group will be led by Sarah Slobin as our new Visual Editor for Enterprise as well as Troy Dunkley, Art Director for Enterprise and Maryanne Murray, Senior Data Visualization Developer, who will both be joining the graphics team.
Sarah joins us from Quartz, where she was the editor of the Things team. She began her journalism career at the New York Times, where she worked across all major news desks including investigations, and ran the business graphics team. She was also a visual editor at Fortune magazine and for the Business & Finance section of the Wall Street Journal. She is a graduate of NYU, and teaches data visualization at the New School Journalism + Design program. Sarah lives in Brooklyn with her illustrator husband, Eric Palma, her daughter Isabel, and a dog named Sketch.
Troy will continue his work art-directing the Reuters Investigates pages, which he was instrumental in launching with the breakthrough series The Child Exchange in 2013; since then, he’s consistently brought a keen eye for design and visual storytelling, including in last years’ landmark Body Exchange and Shock Tactics series, both of which were lauded for their design by SND with awards of excellence.
Maryanne Murray will focus on investigative visual reporting and explanation, leveraging her expertise in 3D animation and graphic story telling.
Sarah’s first day will be March 12 and she will report to me.
