Raleigh paper confirms it will cut standalone business section

The (Raleigh) News & Observer said Monday that it will cut its standalone business section during the week as part of an overall plan to reduce its expenses.

The paper is also cutting 70 positions, including 16 in the newsroom.

Staff reporter Jonathan Cox wrote, “The Business section will be combined with the City & State section Tuesdays through Saturday. On Mondays, The N&O will add a page of business news. That change will start on Monday, June 30.”

The paper’s parent company, McClatchy, announced widespread job cuts and cost-saving measures on Monday, so it’s possible that other papers it owns will also be cutting the standalone business section. Another one of its papers, the Sacramento Bee, made such an announcement earlier this month.
