Quartz makes hires for new lifestyle site

Quartz editor in chief Kevin Delaney sent out the following announcement on Friday:

Hello Quartz journalists—

I’m happy to make some staff announcements related to the imminent launch of Quartzy.

David Kaufman is joining Quartz as global lifestyle editor, based in New York, starting Nov. 20. David was most recently editor in chief of Alexa, a luxury lifestyle magazine produced by the New York Post. He previously edited the home and real estate sections for the Post, and before that spent over a decade as a freelance journalist for outlets that include Monocle, Travel + Leisure, Details, Architectural Digest, the New York Times, New York magazine, and the Wall Street Journal. He has lived in Munich as the travel editor for American Express magazine, and in Tel Aviv as the editor of the English-language edition of Time Out Tel Aviv.

Indrani Sen deserves much of the credit for the launch of Quartzy. She, alongside Jenni Avins, Quartz’s global lifestyle correspondent, has shaped the vision for the edition and its focus on living well in the global economy. And Indrani has commissioned and edited what you see on Quartzy to date. With this launch, Indrani’s title shifts to culture editor. This reflects Indrani’s core coverage focus, though her purview includes our lifestyle efforts as well, and David will report to her.

Indrani joined Quartz as deputy news editor in 2014, and has worked with many of Quartz’s journalists in that role and more recently leading her culture and lifestyle pod. Indrani was earlier a teacher of reporting and writing at the CUNY journalism graduate program, a freelance writer, editor of Voices of NY, and a staff reporter at Newsday, where she covered politics and crime. She has a bachelor’s degree from Oxford and a master’s from Columbia.

Rosie Spinks has joined Quartz as a reporter focused on travel, based in London. Rosie’s work has appeared in the Guardian, Vice, NPR, Racked, the Wall Street Journal, Lucky Peach, and others. She also writes a TinyLetter, and served as the cities editor at large for GOOD in 2014-15.

Annaliese Griffin is joining Quartz as a reporter focused on food, based in Vermont, starting Nov. 6. She was most recently editor and co-founder of Brooklyn Based. Before that, she was a freelancer, an associate professor at CUNY, and an associate editor at the New York Daily News.

Noël Duan is joining Quartz as a reporter focused on fashion and beauty, based in New York, starting Nov. 6. Noël has most recently been doing freelance writing, research, and copywriting for publications that include the Atlantic, Ars Technica, Racked, and Jezebel (among others), and brands like Bobbi Brown Cosmetics and BlinkBar. She has also been a writer and editor with Yahoo, and is currently working on a novel about adolescence in Silicon Valley.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
