Quartz hires new staffers, expands video

Quartz’s editor-in-chief and co-president Kevin J. Delaney announced the following new hires and editorial staff changes on Tuesday:

Adam Pasick is leaving Bangkok after about two years there and will be working from NYC during the month of June before moving to Washington DC in July. When he’s back in the US, Adam will be our editor for breaking news and push products, including the Daily Brief email newsletter, the Brief homepage, and other related upcoming products. He’ll also have responsibility for figuring out Quartz’s best approaches for covering breaking news more broadly. Adam returns with wife Sarah, whose work reassignment at USAID is prompting their return to the US, and young daughter Ada.

Hanna Kozlowska is the first official member of that new Breaking News/Push team, having joined us on staff after a few months as a general assignment freelancer. Prior to joining Quartz, Hanna worked on the New York Times opinion section, at Foreign Policy, and as a stringer for the NYT in Poland. She’s a graduate of Swarthmore and speaks Polish. Hanna is now working with Yinka to prepare the Quartz Africa launch and next month will shift fully to the Brief and Push team role.

Deena Shanker has joined us in New York to cover the food industry and consumer goods. Deena is a former commercial litigator, with a law degree from University of Pennsylvania Law School. She was Healthy Food Editor at Buzzfeed and has written about the food industry for Salon, Fortune, and Grist. A graduate of Barnard College, Deena most recently was writing the Broadsheet daily email newsletter at Fortune. She speaks Hebrew. @deenashanker

Adam Freelander joins us as a video journalist, coming from the New York Times, where he has been an editor and producer, working on long-form enterprise pieces while also becoming one of their go-to editors for quick-turn news videos. He has created stories for nearly every section of the site. His first love is editing, though his skills run the gamut, including shooting and post-production. Adam was earlier managing editor of Unigo.com, a crowd-sourced guide for college applicants based heavily in video. @adamplease

Rounding out our video team is Jacob Templin, who joins us a video journalist on April 20. He has reported, shot and edited videos around the world, most recently with NationSwell, a digital startup, where he built a thriving social video storytelling operation. Earlier, Jacob was a senior video journalist for Time Magazine. He produced features and news stories on subjects as diverse as Tough Mudder competitions and Saudi Arabian political prisoners, while also building out the organization’s YouTube and Vimeo channels. He teaches multi-platform storytelling at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs. And he’s a licensed deep sea diver with a penchant for underwater photography.@jacobtemplin
