Quartz hires ideas editor, markets reporter in London, others

Quartz editor in chief Kevin Delaney sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

Hello Quartz –

I’m happy to announce that several editorial staff are joining Quartz in the coming few weeks.

Georgia Frances King is joining our NYC staff starting July 6 as an Ideas editor, reporting to Paul Smalera. She’ll bring her talents to bear on writing by outside contributors with a global footprint, primarily in the areas of culture and technology. For the past three years, Georgia has been editor of Kinfolk, the influential “slow lifestyle” magazine from Portland, Oregon, known for its distinctive design aesthetic and its cultivation of a higher emotional quality of life. Before Kinfolk, she was second-in-command at frankie, an Australian magazine devoted to design, art, photography, and crafts, where she wrote articles, commissioned outside writers and oversaw its website. An Australian by birth, Georgia has also lived in India, Japan, and Denmark, and speaks Japanese. She has a bachelor’s in communications from RMIT in Melbourne. You can follow her @georgiafrancesk

Eshe Nelson is joining Quartz as a markets and economics reporter in London, starting July 25. Eshe joins us from Bloomberg where she has covered the European bond and currency markets for the past three years, a period which spans the aftermath of Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, the UK election and referendums, Greece’s debt negotiations, and the rise and fall of emerging markets. Eshe will bring her eye for a story, her analytical chops, and her love of data to helping our audience make connections across asset classes, companies, and products. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from City University in London. You can follow her @eshelouise

Johnny Simon is joining Quartz as our photo editor, working from New York starting July 5. He will expand coverage anchored in photography and visual culture and consult across the newsroom to guide our use of images sitewide. Johnny will report to Caitlin Hu. Johnny most recently was a photo editor at Mashable, where his work was included for recognition as Best Group Editing Portfolio by Pictures of the Year International 2016. Before that, he was a picture editor at MSNBC and Slate, and an intern at the White House. He holds a bachelor’s degree in visual communication from Ohio University. You can follow him @johnnysimon.

Elijah Wolfson is joining Quartz as a deputy editor to oversee our science and health coverage. Based in San Francisco starting July 25, he’ll coordinate with Akshat Rathi to expand and deepen our coverage of pure tech and social sciences, and their application in areas like our cities, and human augmentation. Elijah has been wearing two hats at Newsweek, where he’s both a senior editor, writing and editing stories on science, health, technology, and culture, and the editorial director of Medical Daily, a sister site under the IBT Media umbrella. Before Newsweek, he was editorial director of Healthline.com. Among the stories he’s edited at Newsweek are “GMO scientists could save the world from hunger, if we let them” which helped make the case that CRISPR technology could alleviate world hunger, and “Silicon Valley is trying to make humans immortal—and finding some success” tracking the growing trend of tech billionaires investing in immortality science. Sari Zeidler is joining Quartz as global growth editor, starting July 11 in New York. Sari will be based in London beginning this fall, with the mandate of growing Quartz’s readership outside the US in particular. She most recently developed and led the first social media strategy for BBC Worldwide’s features section in London, where she was responsible for a cumulative Facebook audience of more than 10 million and a Webby award-winning BBC Earth Instagram account. Sari also wrote for the BBC website and was earlier a digital producer for the USA Network and homepage producer at CNN. Sari has a bachelor’s in English from SUNY Albany and speaks Italian. Also, Alice Truong, our pioneering Silicon Valley correspondent, will move to Hong Kong this fall as our deputy growth editor for Asia and India. Alice previously worked in Hong Kong for the Wall Street Journal, and returns there to work with Heather Timmons and Diksha Madhok on building up Quartz’s readership in those regions. Since late 2014, Alice has anchored our tech coverage from San Francisco, publishing a steady stream of pieces with her take on the news. Alice will spend the months of August and September in New York working with the growth team here prior to her Asia move. She speaks Cantonese and Fujian/Hokkien, which is possibly more handy in Hong Kong than San Francisco.
