Publishers honor WSJ reporter

Wall Street Journal reporter Daisuke Wakabayashi was named journalist of the year by the Society of Publishers in Asia for his coverage of the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Dean Napolitano of The Journal writes, “The judges cited Mr. Wakabayashi, based in the Journal’s Tokyo bureau, for ‘giving readers immediate snapshots of the frustration, danger and excitement of reporting on a huge story…under extremely difficult circumstances.’

“Mr. Wakabayashi, 35 years old, won the award in the category for English-language newspapers that circulate widely in three or more countries. He also won for excellence in feature writing for a series of articles on Japan’s recovery from the tsunami.

“At a ceremony on Thursday night in Hong Kong, SOPA also honored the Journal’s Asian edition for excellence in business reporting for a series of articles on the challenges facing India that threaten to undermine its rapid economic growth.

“The Journal also received two honorable mentions in opinion writing: in the English-language category for the Asian print edition and the Chinese-language category for its online edition.”
