Protocol is adding 25 new positions, bringing its total employee count to approximately 80 by the end of the year.

The move marks a comeback for the company, which like other outlets was forced to make cuts in response to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. Protocol’s coverage is designed for business, tech and policy professionals, with roughly one-third of its audience coming from each category.

President Bennett Richardson said 200,000 people have signed up to receive at least one of the eight newsletter products.

“Our long-term ambition is definitely to build Protocol into a hybrid model with professional services and subscriptions,” Richardson said. “There aren’t a lot of places where you can reach engineers and C-suite executives alike through the same publication. Protocol has been able to convene an audience that touches both of those communities.”

Protocol is also planning on launching Protocol Climate, a newsletter focused on the tech industry’s role in dealing with climate change and emerging climate technologies.

Protocol Policy, a new newsletter focused on tech policy is also set to launch. This will expand Protocol’s coverage of entertainment and gaming.
