Portfolio hires former LA Times ME

New business magazine Conde Nast Portfolio has hired Doug Frantz, the former managing editor of the Los Angeles Times, to be a senior writer for the magazine and be based in Washington, according to a release.

The release stated, “He first joined The Los Angeles Times in 1987 as a business reporter and later served as an investigative reporter in the paper’s Washington bureau. From 1994 to 2003 Frantz worked at The New York Times as a business reporter, an investigative reporter, foreign correspondent, and investigations editor. He returned to The Los Angeles Times as a foreign correspondent in 2003 and was appointed managing editor in 2005.

“Mr. Franz began his career at The Albuquerque Tribune where he was city editor from 1975 to 1978. He then joined The Chicago Tribune as an investigative reporter in Chicago and Washington.

“Mr. Frantz is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, a two-time winner of the Worth Bingham Prize for investigative reporting, and a recipient of the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. His ninth book, The Nuclear Jihadist, will be published in December. Written with his wife, Catherine Collins, the book is an account of how A. Q. Khan, the Pakistani scientist, spread nuclear weapons technology to Pakistan, Libya, North Korea, and Iran, and how the United States government failed to stop him.”

He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
