Porter to stop writing “Economic Scene” column at NY Times

Eduardo Porter

Eduardo Porter, who has written the “Economic Scene” column for the New York Times for the past six years, is moving to another position at the paper.

Porter writes:

I will miss writing the column. But I relish the opportunity this opens to write in another form, free of a column’s weekly demands to explore the drama of American life in greater depth.

I will be devoting the next few weeks to figuring out what to focus on next — chatting with my editors, as well as with the sources I have come to rely on for sober, authoritative thinking.

Formerly he was a member of The Times’ editorial board, where he wrote about business, economics and other matters.

Porter began his career in journalism over two decades ago as a financial reporter for Notimex, a Mexican news agency, in Mexico City. He was deployed as a correspondent to Tokyo and London, and in 1996 he moved to São Paulo, Brazil, as editor of América Economía, a business magazine.

In 2000, Porter went to work at The Wall Street Journal in Los Angeles to cover the growing Hispanic population. He joined The  Times in 2004 to cover economics.

Chris Roush
