Popular retail reporter leaving Raleigh paper

May 18, 2011

Sue Stock, a retail reporter at The (Raleigh) News & Observer who became a local cult hero for her stories about coupons and saving money while shopping, is leaving the paper.

Her last day is Friday.

Stock writes, “My husband and I have weighed the pros and cons and decided that this is the right move and the right time.

“We would like to be closer to our families, which are in the Northeast and the Midwest. But our final destination is still up in the air.

“Leaving a full-time steady job while the country is coming out of a recession is not something I do lightly. It’s also something I know a lot of people daydream about doing.”

Stock wrote a popular “Taking Stock” blog about shopping. In 2008, executive editor John Drescher called her the “Coupon Queen” in a column and noted a talk she gave about saving money while shopping drew a crowd of 300 to a local movie theater.

She previously spent three years and four months as a retail and business reporter for the Lansing State Journal in Michigan.
