Pollock named business editor of New York Times

Ellen Pollock

New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet, managing editor Joseph Kahn, and deputy managing editor Rebecca Blumenstein sent out the following announcement to the staff on Tuesday:

Dear Colleagues,
We are delighted to announce that Ellen Pollock, the former editor in chief of Bloomberg Businessweek, will become the next editor of Business Day.
Ellen has a rare mix of skills that suits the mission and importance of our business, finance, media, tech and economics coverage. Both as a reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal and then at Businessweek, she has proven herself a master of business storytelling. Her discerning eye for urgent, creative cover stories helped Businessweek win National Magazine Awards in 2012 and 2016.
She is also a fierce competitor on the newsiest stories of the moment, from corporate fraud to technology-led disruption of traditional industries. She has a magazine editor’s sensibility for memorable takeouts, and the drive to be fast, clear and compelling on the most important news.
Ellen, who will take up the post in early May, will replace Dean Murphy, who as announced earlier will take on a new role in guiding enterprise journalism across the newsroom. Ellen will inherit an operation that has produced a stream of prize-winning stories, from Chinese princelings and Takata airbags to subprime lending.
Just as important, she is arriving at a time when business coverage in all its aspects is more vital to The Times than ever before. With a businessman as president, populists riding a wave of economic discontent, and the tech world changing many aspects of everyday life, business is in many ways the story of our time.
Ellen will work closely with Rebecca Blumenstein and the rest of the masthead to guide new investments in Bizday. We’ll have more to say soon about our plans to expand The Times’s commitment to providing the world’s best business journalism.
Dean, Joe and Rebecca

  • I wonder if the new business editor of the NYT would be interested in articles from the Los Angeles region, which is the number one manufacturer in the nation.
