Stuart Lau

Stuart Lau, former Europe correspondent for the South China Morning Post, has been hired by Politico Europe in the newly created post of EU-China correspondent.

Lau will start on Jan. 18.

He will help launch China Direct, a weekly newsletter that will take an in-depth look at the state of EU-China relations.

Lau will take the lead on coverage of the diplomatic and commercial relationship between Europe and China. He will be attached to Politico Europe’s trade desk but will also work closely with other teams, such as tech and climate, in the Brussels, London, Paris, Washington and Berlin newsrooms.

The newsletter will be launched in March.

Editor in Chief Stephen Brown said: “This is probably the most important – and troubled – diplomatic relationship of our times. Every policy conversation in Brussels, London, Paris or Berlin these days starts or ends with China and it’s a relationship that is getting more complicated by the week. We could not be happier to welcome Stuart to the team”.

A Hong Kong native, Lau speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese.
