Philly Inquirer assistant biz editor named Nieman Visiting Fellow

Janet Alvarez, an assistant business editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, has been named a Nieman Visiting Fellow.

Alvarez is also a television contributor for CNBC and Telemundo.

As a Fellow, Alvarez hopes to develop widespread COVID-19 vaccination education initiatives to inform people of color when vaccines are distributed. The goal is to assist vulnerable populations, especially the undocumented, who may be reluctant or find it difficult to be vaccinated.

Alvarez has been director of news & social media for Univision, contributing editor and video host for TheStreet.com, podcast host for Time Inc. and Charles Schwab’s “Insights & Ideas podcast, managing editor of Mint.com and Quicken, U.S. news editor for Reuters BreakingViews, and an anchor/reporter for nationally-syndicated news program “First Business.”

Alvarez holds an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, and MBA from the Thunderbird School at Arizona State University, and a certificate from the Wharton Business School’s Business Journalism Seminars.
