Paul Gordon, the business editor of the Peoria Journal Star in Illinois, has accepted the buyout offer from the paper’s parent company. His last day at work will be Friday.
Gordon writes, “The Internet is the future, but some people who started out with manual typewriters still struggle with the concept, still get frustrated when we’re told to ‘get it on the Web, hurry.’
“Don’t get me wrong; I have been able to adapt to the changes. But other factors have combined to lead me to this decision. When it got to the point this became a job rather than my passion, I believed it best I leave before that started to show in my work.
“I want to thank the mentors I had who taught me news judgement and clarity in writing and editing.
“Thank you to the sources who trusted me to present the news accurately, yet understood I was human when I sometimes made an error.
“Most of all, thank you loyal Journal Star readers, for paying attention to our pages and for reading me the 18 years I have been writing this column.”
