Alex Mahadevan, a data journalist with personal finance website The Penny Hoarder, is leaving the outlet to join MediaWise, where he will be senior multimedia reporter.

Mahadevan’s area of focus at The Penny Hoarder has been to scrape, structure, and analyze data to find interesting, hidden stories. He previously worked as news innovation editor for Observer Media Group, where he ran the website, shot and edited videos, and wrote breaking news and feature stories.

He has a master’s degree in applied economics from Florida State University and has earned numerous Florida Press Association awards for feature writing and multimedia storytelling.

MediaWise is a nonprofit digital literacy project funded by Google and the Poynter Institute. It aims to teach one million teenagers — half from underserved communities — how to sort fact from fiction online by 2020.

The Penny Hoarder cut editorial staff in March. “It’s no secret that the media industry is in a state of great change. We’ve made choices to better position ourselves for the future,” said Kyle Taylor, founder and CEO, in a statement, per reporting by Margie Manning of The St. Petersburg Catalyst.
