The Florida Society of News Editors awards ceremonies took place last week in St. Petersburg. El Sentinel, the Spanish-speaking team of the Orlando Sentinel, walked away with two first place reporting awards.
El Sentinel editor and former reporter Jennifer Marcial Ocasio and Carlos Vasquez Otero were recognized for their story, “From prostitution to business success.” Vasquez Otero also received a first place award for his story on Miguel Gallardo, a Mexican soccer player.
Carlos Vasquez Otero has since moved on to Entravision Communications, an American media company based in Santa Monica, California, that caters to the Spanish-speaking Hispanic community. He has served as managing editor since November 2018.
Prior to the Orlando Sentinel, Vasquez Otero worked as a freelance video creator from 2012 to 2017. Vasquez Otero graduated from The University of Barcelona with a masters in journalism.
She also was a reporter/editor for MiamiDiario.com from September 2011 to February 2012, as well. She graduated with a masters in Mass Communications/New Media from Florida International University.
