Oregonian looking for assistant biz editor

February 10, 2011

The Oregonian, the daily newspaper in Portland, is seeking an assistant business editor.

The paper’s business section is standalone on Sundays and some days during the week, but folds into the metro section on most days, says executive editor Peter Bhatia.

This editor works jointly with a second assistant business editor, planning and executing five daily sections, a Sunday business enterprise section, a Monday business page and Page One enterprise, while also feeding and managing the business impact page on OregonLive.

The person would supervised four to five reporters, pushing online coverage first and shifting to print deadlines later in the day. They would also work with reporters on beat management, story consultation, online strategy (especially with reporters writing blogs), setting short- and long-term goals and evaluating their progress.

The focus is on unique, local enterprise and watchdog journalism and creating comprehensive packages that take advantage of presentation opportunities both online and in print.

This editor also works one weekend shift on Saturdays doing general news assigning, editing and online work.

If you’re interested, the contact person is Bruce Hammond, the enterprise and investigative editor, at brucehammond@oregonian.com.
