Marketwatch.com media columnist Jon Friedman writes Wednesday about New York Times mergers and acquisitions reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin, who recently has been mired in controversy about his reporting.
Friedman writes, “If Sorkin didn’t exist, the Times would have wanted to invent someone like him. He is equally at ease reporting and blogging for the paper, writing a book, explaining the vicissitudes of Wall Street on CNBC, pontificating on ‘Charlie Rose’ and trading quips with Bill Maher on HBO .
“By helping to establish the Times’ Wall Street coverage in the digital age, Sorkin has become the face of the Times at a crucial juncture. The Times is competing in a death match against The Wall Street Journal, which recently launched a New York edition to take dead aim at its cross-town rival.
“Still, his instinct for self-promotion has touched a nerve in the media.
“‘I think that when you are aggressive and competitive and you write provocative things, there are always going to be critics,’ Sorkin told me.”
