NYT names new Sunday biz editor

New York Times business editor Larry Ingrassia sent out the following announcement to the staff on Thursday afternoon:

I’m pleased to announce that David Gillen will become our new Sunday Business editor, taking the helm of one of The Times’s best showcases for narrative journalism.

The job is a great fit for Dave, who brings to the job a deep knowledge of finance, business and economics, as well as magazine-editing experience.

Dave joined The Times as Bizday’s finance editor in November 2007, and helped elevate our coverage of Wall Street to new heights during the financial meltdown. He was promoted to a deputy business editor position overseeing finance a year ago, in recognition of his fine work. Before coming to The Times, he worked for many years at Bloomberg News, including as assistant managing editor at Bloomberg Markets magazine, where he handled stories on a wide variety of business and economic topics.

As reporters who have worked with Dave on the finance team will attest – and other reporters in Bizday will soon have the pleasure of learning – he has a magical touch with copy, even when things are flying fast and furious. He will be reaching out to the staff for features to grace the section.

In addition to a great platform, Dave will have a terrific team to work with, including writers Gretchen Morgenson, David Segal and Natasha Singer, and editors Jeff Sommer, Phyllis Korkki, Dan Cooreman, Fred Norgaard and Linda Cohn. I am excited about giving him the keys to the race car, and watching him put the pedal to the metal.

I also want to thank Damon Darlin for his great work over the past month as visiting Sunday Biz editor; his smarts and deft editing touch have helped the section to continue to shine. I think it has been as fun for him to be here as it has been for us to have him.

I look forward to working with Dave in his new job, and I’m sure that all of you will as well.
