NYT magazine hires away editor from Bloomberg Businessweek

Jon Kelly, an editor at Bloomberg Businessweek for the past 16 months, has been hired by the New York Times magazine.

Zeke Turner of Women’s Wear Daily writes, “Kelly, 29, will run the front of the Sunday Magazine and Greg Veis will become politics editor. Kelly, with assistance from Veis, will be tasked with reworking the front of the book now that its main columnist, Bill Keller, is dropping his ‘First’ column to become an op-ed columnist. Before Businessweek, Kelly worked at Vanity Fair, where he began as editor in chief Graydon Carter’s assistant before going on to edit different sections of the magazine, including Vanities.

“Lindren, then executive editor of Businessweek, hired Kelly to run the back of the magazine as it was relaunching under editor Josh Tyrangiel. Asked if he thought Tyrangiel would be frustrated by the hire, Lindren said, ‘No, I’m sure not. I hope not. I haven’t talked to Josh about it, I don’t think so. Bloomberg has a lot of money; they’ll go out and get another great editor.'”

At Vanity Fair, Kelly served as associate editor. In this role, he commissioned and edited features, as well as edited the monthly book and ‘Out to Lunch’ columns and the ‘Vanities’ section.
