NYT layoffs hit biz news desk

Business reporter Kate Galbraith of the New York Times is among those laid off at the paper because the buyout offer didn’t get enough takers, reports New York Magazine.

Galbraith joined The Times in June 2008 to write about renewable energy. She spent the previous year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, from which she also received her undergraduate degree in English literature.

Before that, Galbraith wrote for the Economist magazine, which she joined in 2000 in London. After several years as an online editor she became a finance correspondent for the magazine covering insurance, securities exchanges and fund management.

In 2005 Galbraith moved to Austin, Texas, where she spent two years as the Economist’s Southwest correspondent. Going from London to Texas was a culture shock, but she was intrigued by the oil and gas state’s progress in renewable energy — notably wind power. Galbraith has also written for the Let’s Go and Lonely Planet travel guides, and holds a master’s degree from the London School of Economics.

Galbraith is an avid hiker, having grown up going on pack trips most summers in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. After completing the 2008 Boston Marathon, she retired from marathon running.
