NY Times tech reporter Benner to cover Justice Department

Katie Benner

Katie Benner, a tech reporter in the New York Times’ San Francisco bureau, is moving to its Washington bureau to cover the Justice Department.

Washington bureau chief Elisabeth Bumiller wrote in an announcement:

Katie has had a terrific run in The New York Times’s San Francisco bureau covering Apple, venture capital and startups. She helped steer the paper’s coverage of the encryption fight between Apple and the F.B.I., and investigated how tech employees chasing the Silicon Valley dream are short-changed by executives and investors. Most recently she’s written about sexual harassment in the tech industry and the legal contracts used to keep that behavior a secret — work that was recently honored by the PEN Center USA.

Before coming to The Times, Katie was a tech columnist at Bloomberg. She also spent nearly a decade at Fortune, where she covered financial markets, private equity and hedge funds. Her work includes profiles of Hank Paulson, Robert Schiller and Reid Hoffman, as well as features on the 2008 financial crisis and financial fraud investigations.

She’s a graduate of Bowdoin, lived in China in the early 2000s and starts in Washington on Jan. 8. Please welcome her!
