NY Times tech columnist Manjoo moves to opinion section

Farhad Manjoo has been named a New York Times opinion columnist.

Here is an announcement from editorial page editor James Bennet, deputy editor Jim Dao and deputy editor Katie Kingsbury.

Farhad Manjoo

We’re very happy to tell you that Farhad Manjoo will be joining us as a columnist next month. Most of you probably know Farhad as the State of the Art columnist for the Business section, a role he’s held since February 2014. As rigorous a reporter as he is a thinker, Farhad brings deep sophistication about the business and culture of technology and the big ideas emerging from its advance. For Opinion, he will remain based in Northern California and focused on the future. From the impact of technology on the culture wars to its role in heightening inequalities of wealth and power, he will range across the many ways new devices, networks and forms of intelligence are changing, and often undermining, society, democracy and the economy — in San Francisco and around the world. He’ll help our readers think through how societies at large, and each of us as individuals, can harness technology’s benefits while mitigating its harms.

We’d like to say thank you to our colleagues in the newsroom, and particularly to Ellen Pollock and Pui-Wing Tam, for their advice and support for Farhad’s move to Opinion. He will be joining our growing team of experts on technology, including Kara Swisher, Susan Fowler Rigetti, Sarah Jeong and Alex Kingsbury.

Farhad has written over the years for The Wall Street Journal, Slate, Fast Company and other publications. He is the author of “True Enough: Learning to Live in a Post-Fact Society,” which was published by Wiley in 2008. He’s at work now on another book, about the efforts by Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google to rule the business world. Born in South Africa, Farhad attended Cornell University, where he was editor in chief of the student newspaper.

You can expect other additions to our lineup in coming months as we continue to broaden the range of Times debate about big questions.

The plan is for Farhad to begin writing his column after the first of the year, but he’ll be joining the department on Dec. 17 and visiting us that week. Please join us in welcoming him.
