New York Times reporter Jeanna Smialek, who covers the Federal Reserve Board and the economy, has signed a deal to write a book about the Fed.

The book will be published in 2022 and is tentatively titled “Invisible Empires.” The publisher is Knopf.

The book will be an account of how the Fed is transforming itself into an institution aligned with the interests of working Americans, rather than banking and finance. The book traces how the shift has been both accelerated and tested by the central bank’s unprecedented response to the pandemic.

Smialek previously covered economics at Bloomberg News, where she also wrote feature stories for Businessweek magazine.

Smialek is studying for her master’s in business administration at New York University’s Stern School. She graduated with a bachelor’s in journalism and international relations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
