NY Times Opinion hires WSJ’s Serkez

Yaryna Serkez

Stuart Thompson, head of the Opinion visual journalism department at the New York Times, sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

We’re pleased to announce Yaryna Serkez is joining the Opinion Graphics team as a graphics editor.

Yaryna (pronounced ya-REE-nah) is a full-stack data journalist. She spent the last three years creating interactive stories for The Wall Street Journal, where her daily responsibilities varied from data scraping and analysis to design and web development. During her time at the Journal, Yaryna produced many award-winning pieces, such as her visual analysis of the space industry, a map-based story about Arctic shipping routes, and an interactive explainer of China’s economic rise.

We’re excited to add Yaryna’s skill set to the team, which includes a sharp eye for design and an ability to create web-based 3D explorations. These technical skills will help push our creative flair through a busy year involving a new “crusade,” the Olympics and an election.

Yaryna will work remotely from Germany. She’ll start by joining us in New York for one month beginning around March 16.
