New York Times acting editorial page editor Kathleen Kingsbury sent out the following announcement on Monday:
Siddhartha Mahanta joins Opinion as vertical editor for business, economics and technology. Most recently, Sid was managing editor of Rest of World, a digital magazine that covers tech, business and culture. Sid began his career as an editor at Foreign Policy magazine, before moving to The Atlantic and Business Insider, where he created a magazine-style features section. There, he commissioned and edited a number of award-winning pieces, including a devastating account of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, by Evan Ratliff.
Before that, Sid worked as a reporter for National Journal and Mother Jones, where he covered the 2010 midterms, debt ceiling talks, and the revolutions in Egypt and Libya. He has also reported on corporate power and politics, big agriculture and just-in-time supply chains. His adventures have also included a brief stint as an editor at a semiconductor company in Austin, and a project researching the lives and stories of domestic workers in northeast India.
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Sid has written about books, theater, film, food and other subjects for The New Yorker, The New Republic and The Texas Monthly. He is a self-described basketball nerd, theater-and-film obsessive, perpetually confused son of immigrants and Texas evangelist/apologist.
