The New York Times has tapped Matt Ericson as assistant managing editor for data journalism. Recently, he was an assistant managing editor overseeing the Times’ CMS and much of the newsroom’s work with product and design.
Ericson will remain involved with product and design as he takes on his new role. He will be guiding the creation of new data teams for elections, weather, and daily and enterprise journalism.
He has been with The Times for 19 years, previously also serving as an associate editor and deputy graphics director. Before that, he was a senior editor/web applications at The Philadelphia Inquirer.
He has also interned at The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Ericson is a University of Iowa graduate.
