NY Times hires Summers as Sunday biz editor

Nick Summers

New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent the following announcement to the staff:

Please welcome Nick Summers, our new Sunday Business editor.

Nick joins us from Bloomberg Businessweek, where he was a features editor. While at the magazine he edited stories on a wide variety of topics:  cut-rate coffins; introducing luxury cruises to the Chinese market; how Goldman Sachs lost $1.2 billion of Libya’s money; a tale entitled “How Two Guys Lost God and Found $40 million,” and most recently the story of a Pittsburgh gambler who wrote an algorithm that made him $1 billion at the track.

Also at Businessweek, Nick wrote a story about exploding ATMs in the U.K. that introduced this innovative robbery technique to U.S. readers.

Prior to joining Businessweek in 2012, Nick was a senior writer at Newsweek. And before that he succeeded John Koblin as the New York Observers’s media columnist.

I worked with Nick at Businessweek. Adrienne met him while he was doing a stint in London and they were both (temporarily) living the jolly expat life. She was in the midst of returning to New York, and over coffee at her apartment, she broached the topic of him joining The Times as movers took her couch and boxes out the door. She calls it her one of her more awkward job interviews — he even had to bring his own coffee.

Nick lives in Brooklyn with his wife Eliza and baby son. In his spare time he is a champion salsa maker, although I’m told he cheats in competition. Something to do with almonds.

Nick will join us on May 21.
