NY Times hires Quartz’s Pyne for video team

Solana Pyne

Solana Pyne has been hired by the New York Times to be a senior member of its leadership team in video.

Pyne will lead teams of producers and journalists on coverage across news and enterprise with a focus on original reporting, collaborating with desks across the newsroom, and executing large-scale video projects and interactive work. She will also partner on evaluating new opportunities and the department’s evolving strategy.

For the past four years, Pyne has worked as executive producer and senior producer for Quartz. She joined to launch its video team and built an award-winning operation that has produced everything from viral hits on science news to pop culture explainers to a weekly news series reporting on the ground from 25 countries. She created and co-produced a Murrow Award-winning science series, In the Deep, and co-created What Happens Next, a series on future trends that has won a Murrow and a Loeb Award and is in the running for an Emmy.

Before joining Quartz, Pyne oversaw video for the international news site GlobalPost, where pieces she worked on won a slew of awards, including a Peabody, a Polk and multiple SABEWs. She has worked as a correspondent in South America, North Africa and Southeast Asia. Her tenure at GlobalPost included working closely with our very own Mark Scheffler and Jonah Kessel. Her visual journalism has been published by PRI, CNN, PBS “NewsHour,” Discover magazine, Newsday and The Cambodia Daily.

Her video career began by covering the New York Police Department for NY1, where she secured a desk at the shack alongside other reporters at One Police Plaza.
