New York Times deputy managing editor Rebecca Blumenstein and Dealbook founder Andrew Ross Sorkin sent out the following announcement on Friday:
We’re delighted to welcome Jason Karaian to The Times to help lead the next chapter of DealBook, which connects the dots of the day’s most important news for our growing audience of influential decision makers, from Wall Street to Washington to Silicon Valley to Beijing.
As DealBook’s editor, based in London, Jason will work with reporters across the newsroom and bureaus to infuse DealBook’s daily morning newsletter with more scoops, delicious insider anecdotes and must-read tidbits.
For the past six years, Jason has worked at Quartz, most recently as global finance and economics editor. He wrote and edited the Quartz Daily Brief newsletter, and led several pop-up editions covering the World Economic Forum in Davos — where he built a radio antenna to track world leaders’ helicopters. He previously spent 10 years at The Economist Group, covering financial services, corporate finance and other business beats.
“Jason is one of the most creative financial journalists I’ve ever worked with, a gifted writer and editor who brings out the best in his colleagues,” said Adam Pasick, editorial director of newsletters. “He’s the only person I know who can write with authority about chief financial officers, heavy metal, the guy who invented spreadsheets (‘a genuine thrill,’ he said) and the Harry and Meghan news as distilled for C.E.O.s.”
Jason will work alongside Andrew Ross Sorkin and Michael de la Merced — as well as other new hires we hope to announce soon.
