New York Times business editor Dean Murphy sent out the following announcement on Monday afternoon:
I’m pleased to announce that Jesse Drucker of the projects and investigations team at Bloomberg News will be joining BizDay as a reporter focusing on taxation and corporate finance.
Jesse brings an impressive record of investigative and explanatory journalism to one of the most complex and important business subjects in the national and international conversation. Judges from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers once described Jesse’s tax coverage as “simply masterful” and “jaw dropping.”
Among his most influential pieces was one that revealed how Google avoided billions of dollars in taxes by using a pair of obscure tax shelters known as the “Double Irish” and the “Dutch Sandwich” to attribute profits to a Bermuda mailbox. More recently, he wrote a cover story for Bloomberg Businessweek about the United States becoming a new Switzerland – a leading tax and secrecy haven for rich foreigners.
Jesse has been at Bloomberg since 2009, including a three-year stint in Rome focusing on European investigative stories. Before Bloomberg, he spent nearly a decade at The Wall Street Journal. He has also worked at the New York Observer, The Star-Ledger and Salon.com. He began his journalism career as a 16-year-old intern at the Village Voice, where he wrote his first investigative article — on alleged organized crime infiltration of the San Gennaro festival.
Outside the world of journalism, Jesse is a music obsessive. He owns a tube amplifier and still buys vinyl. The late Chicago soul legend Otis Clay sang at his wedding. While a student at Columbia University, he says, his 5 a.m. jazz radio show on WKCR was sandwiched between two legendary programs — Phil Schaap’s Bird Flight and the Stretch Armstrong/Bobbito the Barber overnight hip hop show.
And not to be forgotten, Jesse says, “I’m a graduate of the High School of Art & Design, where I was three years ahead of rap duo Mobb Deep and about 45 years behind Tony Bennett.”
He starts on November 28. Please welcome him.
