New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet, Times managing editor Joseph Kahn, and Times deputy managing editor Matt Purdy sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:
To the Staff,
Over the last several years, BizDay has become an assembly line of groundbreaking enterprise journalism, from the riches of the Chinese princelings and the machinations of the iEconomy to the dangers of General Motors cars and Takata airbags. The list goes on: private equity, subprime lending, commodity price fixing, and many more. Each of these projects has taken a village of journalists, but one constant throughout has been Dean Murphy, who has led BizDay, as deputy and then business editor, with his head, his heart and his hands.
Now, we’re pleased to announce, Dean is going to take his talents to the third floor as an associate editor.
He will take on a new role in enterprise journalism across the newsroom, with a focus on investigative and enterprise reporting driven by the new administration. This is a job we have contemplated for some time but it has become urgent now as the story continues to expand.
He will work as a deputy to Matt in helping to drive, vet and schedule our signature work on the Trump story from departments around the paper. And he will directly edit a team of reporters probing the implications of the government’s vow to dismantle the “administrative state.”
Given the importance of showcasing our most distinctive journalism across platforms throughout the week, Dean will also help manage the flow of enterprise offerings between the weekday and weekend operations. He will work Tuesday through Saturday, driving our best enterprise into the Sunday paper. We will have further announcements soon about our weekend operation.
Dean’s wide experience both here and at The Los Angeles Times makes him well suited for this new role. In addition to his work in business, he has been a metro and state reporter, a foreign and national correspondent, as well as deputy national editor.
While Dean is moving to a new job, the centrality of the business and economics story in our report will only grow over time, and not just because there is a businessman in the White House.
Rebecca Blumenstein will help Dean guide BizDay through the transition, and is leading the search for Dean’s successor. He will move to his new job after a new business editor is named.
Please join us in thanking Dean for his stellar tenure in BizDay and congratulating him on his new job.
