NY Times appoints Ryan deputy managing editor

Carolyn Ryan

The following excerpt announcement was sent out by The New York Times:

Dear Colleagues,

As we approach the presidential election, please join us in celebrating a fabulously successful first term. We have all witnessed the emergence of a model leader with an abiding commitment to diversity and inclusion, who listens and learns, defuses conflict with humor, builds consensus, solves problems amicably and champions the work of others.

We are referring, of course, to Carolyn Ryan, who began her term as a masthead leader just after the last election. She will now become a deputy managing editor, a recognition that her focus on building the newsroom staff of the future, and promoting groundbreaking coverage, is at the center of our leadership agenda.

Carolyn has driven some of our most important initiatives, including spotting and recruiting talent, helping shape our long-term strategy and culture, and overseeing high-impact journalism.

Diversity has been a core value to Carolyn throughout her career. Beginning in 2017, she oversaw a recruitment blitz for the newsroom, rethinking our approach to hiring and recruiting more than 400 new staff members in the newsroom, nearly 40 percent of them people of color. She helped Ted Kim establish our yearlong newsroom fellowship for early career journalists, which has become a key pipeline for us to bring diverse talent to The Times. (Almost two-thirds of this year’s fellows are journalists of color.)

In 2018, Carolyn was the inaugural recipient of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association Leadership Award, given to an individual for leadership on diversity in their own newsroom and in the industry.

She is a leader of the company’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative and a close partner of Monica Drake and Joe on exploring how our coverage can better reflect our commitment to diversity. She has worked closely with Talent & Inclusion to improve our systems for managing, compensating and creating career opportunities for our staff. And she is a critical participant in all aspects of our planning and investing for a future of newsroom-led growth for the company.

Before joining the masthead, Carolyn ran some of our largest news desks, including Metro, the Politics desk and the Washington bureau. She has always been a nurturer of talent, and many of the newsroom’s brightest stars were mentored early in their Times careers by Carolyn.

Prior to coming to The Times, Carolyn was a masthead editor at The Boston Globe and oversaw the region’s biggest stories.

Please join us in congratulating Carolyn on her expanded role.
