NPR reporter: All stories are business stories

JIm BurressAll stories are business stories, said National Public Radio reporter Jim Burress in a talk at Murray State University.

Austin Ramsey of the Murray Ledger & Times reports, “And it was finding answers – finding the stories within those numbers – that Burress said became key to his business journalism career.

“‘Somebody told me once that all stories are business stories,’ Burress said. ‘It’s true, I’ve found. Nine times out of 10, there’s a business angle to everything I report.’

“Burress explained how he has grown to find stories hidden within financial reports for big-name companies like Delta Air Lines based in Atlanta. What a company might want you to believe about its investments or returns, he said, may not always be the real story.

“Burress went on to show how he has used his skills in reporting to uncover what success or failures in the business world may be easily construed by words or actions.

“‘I don’t always know how the system works,’ he quipped, ‘but I will pretend like I do until I figure it out.'”
