NPR News names senior business editor

NPR News named Neal Carruth as its senior business editor on Tuesday.

Since August 2011, Carruth has been running NPR’s election coverage, including daily campaign and issues reporting, and dozens of hours of live, special coverage of the primaries, caucuses, conventions and debates. During the long campaign season, he established enterprising series like Parallel Lives about how the candidates’ lives coincide in striking ways, and Solve This, exploring the major issues facing the next president.

As senior business editor, Carruth will also work closely with NPR’s “Planet Money” team. He will step into this new position at the beginning of December, after the elections.

“Carruth was an NPR intern in 1999, and has been with NPR ever since. He’s worked on nearly every NPR news program, and in 2006 was a producer in the Baghdad bureau. Prior to taking on this election, he was the supervising senior producer of NPR’s “All Things Considered,” where he managed daily production of the news magazine.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan, Carruth majored in psychology.

Carruth lives in Washington and is a member of the NPR “Met and Married” list, maintained by Susan Stamberg. He and his wife, Emily Barocas, are proud parents of a young son.
