N&O cuts stock listings, adds phone line

The (Raleigh) News & Observer announced in Thursday’s paper that, starting next Tuesday, it was cutting its stock listings, and adding a phone line for people without Internet access who would like to get stock quotes.

Business editor Mary Cornatzer wrote, “The paper is replacing the Tuesday-through-Friday stock and mutual fund listings with a one-page summary of the day’s market activities. Stock quotes and detailed market data will be available 24 hours a day through The News & Observer Web site, www.newsobserver.com. On the site, readers can look up stock quotes or track their personal stock portfolio.

“For readers without Internet access, the paper is adding a toll-free phone line for stock quotes on a 20-minute delay.

“The paper is making these changes to reduce costs, as newsprint prices continue to rise.

“At the same time, we’re adding elements that readers have requested, including more stocks of regional interest, more commodity prices and indexes of the overseas exchanges.

“In addition to 200 stocks of regional interest, there will be a table of the top 100 mutual funds, based on assets.”
