Jui Chakravorty has been hired by Nikkei Asia as its first special projects editor.

She will be in charge of conceptualizing, managing and executing ambitious editorial projects, and working with journalists in bureaus around the world on deeply-reported pieces that will integrate, augment and advance elements of Nikkei Asia’s digital journalism.

Part of Japan-based holding company Nikkei Inc., which also owns the London-based Financial Times, Nikkei Asia is the English-language news outlet that covers the world with a focus on Asia.

Chakravorty was previously at Reuters, where her assignments ranged from the aftermath of war to mergers and acquisitions. She has worked in Chicago, New York, Israel, Gaza and Detroit. She also served as deputy bureau chief in Mumbai and managed a nationwide team that covered India’s corporate news for the international arm of Reuters.

Most recently, Chakravorty was based in San Francisco as founder of digital journalism startup b-yond tv, which trained aspiring journalists in under-resourced communities and produced stories for clients around the world.

She will be moving to Tokyo to start in her new role next month.
