Nightly Business Report celebrates 30th anniversary

Glenn Garvin of The Miami Herald writes Thursday about “Nightly Business Report,” the daily PBS show that celebrates its 30th anniversary on Thursday.

Garvin writes, “”This has been a bull market for financial journalists,’ says NBR anchor Susie Gharib. ‘t’s not the way we want to get the recognition. But it’s just a fact that in hard economic times, people want more business news that’s more reliable.’

“If there were a windfall-profits tax on Nielsen ratings, NBR would be paying in the top bracket right now. The show’s audience has jumped 15 percent from the same time last year, and it now reaches 750,000 viewers over more than 250 public-TV stations.

“Those numbers would have boggled the minds of the dozen harried staffers who produced that first NBR on Jan. 22, 1979, in studios at Miami’s WPBT-PBS 2. A 15-minute roundup of South Florida business headlines, it was an experiment that few people expected to last and none foresaw going national.”
